Through The Eyes

I lie in bed

Tubes all around me

Barely able to focus

Incoherent most of the time

In my muzzled state

I think of the past

The country that is

The country that was

I imagine I am still in

Robben Island

Lonely and alone

Only the distant sound

Of the water echoing

I try hard to fight

After all, had I not done

That for 27 years

They say I am a fighter

But this time the odds

are against me

The nation awaits

The world awaits

Not ready to let go

But my destiny has arrived

And I have to go

to meet my maker

LOVE YOU ALL

Why?

"Rover", "Chocolate" and "Nunooz"

bark at each other

to make themselves understood

I don't understand what they

are saying because they

speak another language

Why? because they are "dogs"

We are fortunate we have

the power of language

and can communicate with each other

Why then? Is there war in Iraq

Violence and bloodshed n Israel

and Palestine

Terror and crime all over the world

domestic violence in our homes

I don't understand

Is it because we have

forgotten the human language

of love, understanding and compassion

or is the human race no longer "human"

Please God - Help me to understand this

wonderful and beautiful creation

which man has despoiled

please restore my faith in

Human-Kind

Zohra A Hamid

Outcry

Noisy, loud class

Eager, excited voices

All talking at the same time

She sits in the corner

Quietly, transfixed

Expressionless

Autism is her diagnosis

shying away from the others

as tho' scorched

I try to draw her in

her only response is

a blank stare

She goes thro' the motions

of the day in

a trance like state

Then the school bell rings

and Out she Cries

unconsciously clutching

the hand near her

"Jingle Bells"

A broad smile lightens

up her face
